If I Were Cool, I Would Have a Yoda Backpack

I like to believe that I am not a judgmental person. However, I am human. Therefore I judge. Personally I feel that they are different. So today when I saw Yoda clinging to a girl’s back, I judged her.

How often do we pass someone on the street and think, "What were they thinking when they got dressed this morning?" Or "How did a guy like him get a girl like that?" I will admit these unprovoked cruelties have crossed my mind from time to time. The point is not to let them stick. I refuse to be a lowly Wemmick passing out dots on a whim. No. I will not give dots. These people deserve stars. These people deserve compliments. These people deserve kindness. We need more kindness in this world.

She had a Yoda backpack. I loved it! Granted, it’s not the norm. How many Yoda backpacks did you see on campus today? But that's what she likes. Go her for embracing it! I may have judged her, but I did in no way degrade her character. The word “judge” has such a negative connotation. I merely thought she's really cool for owning such an awesome bag. And sure I may not be in love with everyone's apparel choices, but it is self expression. Too many people lack an identity that is truly theirs. So when a person finds an identity all their own and their clothing shows it, I believe they should be commended. Who am I to say that girl is way out of his league? I don't know her. I don't even know him. They are obviously dating for a reason. And they look happy. I’m glad they found one another.

Apparently lately I’m a big fan of giving people the benefit of the doubt. Because I don’t think Chuck knew that the Logan Comcast store was out of routers. Maybe he was just trying to be helpful by giving us faster internet and HE DIDN’T KNOW! People are generally good, even Chuck. But majority of the time judgments are passed too quickly. Social experiences are ridden with inevitable first impressions and judgments. It just happens. I am aware of how challenging it can be to control your thoughts. All I’m saying is we would all be a little happier coexisting if we could be more open minded and less quick to judge. So there, that’s what I think. Go Ahead. Judge me.
